Meet the Magnolia String Quartet

The Magnolia String Quartet is one of Dallas' newest musical groups. We are a group of talented professionals with degrees in music from Texas' finest schools. All members of the group are originally from Georgia, and we strive to bring musical charm of the old South to the dynamic pace of Dallas. In addition to the four-person quartet, we can also provide trio and duo combinations, according to your personal taste. We are now available to add a special touch to your wedding, reception, banquet, or party. The Magnolia String Quartet looks forward to hearing from you to enhance your special occasion!

Sarah Carmichael, Violinist

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Sarah came to Texas in 1995 to study music at the University of Texas at Austin. After completing her Master's in 2001, Sarah began studies with Emanuel Borok of the Dallas Symphony. In 2002, she became a member of the Memphis and Richardson Symphonies. Sarah substitutes with Liesl in the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and also teaches violin and viola students alongside Charles and Karen in the Plano School system.

Charles Krigbaum, Violinist/Violist

Charles came to the Dallas area after completing his undergraduate degree from Colombus State University in Georgia in 2001. Charles has devoted his life to the musical development of small children, by using the Suzuki method to teach young violinists and violists. In the summer of 2003, Charles attended an intensive teacher-trainer program at Indiana University with renowned pedagogue Mimi Zweig. Charles has just completed his Master's degree at UT Arlington with Catherine Forbes, where he is the Head of the Suzuki Division of the String Preparatory Program.

Liesl de Villiers, Violist

Liesl is enjoying her job as the newest member of the viola section in the Dallas Opera Orchestra. Previously, she was a member of the Richardson Symphony. Liesl completed her Master's Degree at the University of North Texas in 2002, where she studied with Susan Dubois. Sarah and Liesl spent the summer of 2001 together at the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, Colorado, where Liesl was the Principal Violist.

Karen Smith, Cellist

A child of musician parents, Karen grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, where she played cello in the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra with Sarah throughout her high school years. Karen completed her degree in cello from Rice University in 2000, under the tutelage of Norman Fisher. Upon graduation, Karen moved to Germany with her husband, and played in the Wurttemberg Philharmonic in Reutlingen. Karen returned to Texas in 2002, where she unexpectedly reunited with Sarah while teaching in the Plano School district. Karen has furthered her cello studies with Christopher Adkins of the Dallas Symphony, and enjoys freelancing in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
